Road Agencies And Highway Maintenance

Some countries have 'Roads Service' as the agency responsible for repairs, servicing and maintenance of roads and highways. It is a company set up by the government with the sole responsibility of ensuring that the roads and highways are usable all the time. Often times the government may choose to outsource such responsibilities to private bodies, leaving the role of supervision and regulation to its available road agency. However, whatever method adopted by any country, the goal remains the same globally, and that is to make the roads, highways and bridges suitable always for use.

When roads are constructed they have a life-span, usually this life-span is calculated using parameters such as material used, amount of expected traffic, weather condition and some other basic assumptions that are necessary for determining how long a road will last. Sometimes, the calculations may prove inadequate and life expectancy of the road is not reached before it starts to deteriorate. It is the duty of the road service agency to provide road and highway maintenance services to keep them in good shape all the time. A failure to do this may present some repercussions such as accidents.

It is the duty of the country's government to provide the funds necessary for these agencies to run effectively. They need to employ the services of experts and professionals to undertake several roles. They need funds to carry out necessary repairs and also apply proper maintenance procedures on the various roads and highways.

For the purpose of focus and efficiency, it is recommended that the road agencies have an independent administration empowered by the state government through the federal government. The state government should oversee its activities, but not hinder its application of necessary measures to ensure safety on the roads.

Proper and regular road and highway maintenance will reduce accidents by at least 50%. Many under-developed countries who pay little or no attention to road maintenance report high number of accidents yearly, and most of it is due to an absence of proper attention to their roads and highways. Adherence to regular maintenance requirements may cost some money, but it will help secure the lives of many.
